At its annual organizational meeting, Trustees with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board acclaimed Windsor Wards 6 & 7 Trustee Barbara Holland as Chair of the nine-member Board. Holland is the first woman Chairperson since the amalgamation of the Essex and Windsor Separate School Boards. Holland was first elected to the Board in 2000 and, over the past eleven years, has served on several Board committees including: Friends and Advocates of Catholic Education, Audit Committee, Faith Development, and Employee Benefits Consultant Committee. Trustee Mary DiMenna was acclaimed to the position of Vice-Chair. DiMenna has been a trustee representing Catholic ratepayers, parents and students in Essex, Kingsville and Leamington since 2003. In addition to spending 33 years as an elementary teacher, DiMenna has been active on several Board committees over the past eight years: including the Audit Committee, Employee Wellness Committee and the Special Education Advisory Committee.

Trustees, Fred Alexander, Joan Courtney, Mary DiMenna, Frank Favot, Barbara Holland, John Macri, Bernie Mastromattei, Jim McMahon, and Lisa Soulliere were elected through the municipal elections process to serve a four-year term (2010- 2014). A Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson are elected annually at the Board’s Organizational Meeting in December to a one-year term that begins immediately.

ST. ROSE CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY PREPARES FOR FULL DAY, EARLY LEARNING

It’s an exciting time at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board as we continue to add new schools to our full day, early learning program. This fall, 23 of our Catholic Elementary Schools will host four and five year old students in our Full Day JK/SK program. The latest school to be added to this growing group is St. Rose Catholic Elementary. Join us this evening at the school as the architectural firm, Glos Associates provides a brief synopsis of the proposed addition and renovations in preparation for Full Day Kindergarten coming to the St. Rose school community in the fall of 2012.

2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge: Pass the Puck for a Buck Announcement

Excitement is starting to build in preparation for the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge coming to Windsor and Essex County from December 28th to January 4th. In anticipation of the event, several community partners have come together to create the Pass the Puck for a Buck program for elementary and secondary schools in our area. Pass the Puck supports school nutritional programs under the Jump Start banner and is sponsored by the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, Purolator Courier, Alpine Construction, Centreline and the Greater Essex County and Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Boards. Members of the Windsor Spitfires selected to play for the U-17 team (Joey Garland, Jordan Maletta and Adam Bateman) will talk about what it means to play for Team Canada as well as what they have to do to prepare for the important tournament. Representatives from several of the sponsoring organizations will also be in attendance. Don’t miss the exciting launch of this program and support our Jump Start Breakfast Program!

YOU 'CAN' DO IT CHALLENGE - STUDENTS SUPPORT COMMUNITY & GET FIT

Staff and students of St. Christopher Catholic Elementary School have found a way to get fit and help the community at the same time. The school has partnered with Next Level Athletics to present the “You Can Do It Challenge”. The first part of the event is a challenge to staff and students at Notre Dame Catholic Elementary to enter a CAN WAR. The school that collects the greatest number of cans will win a free fitness class for its students. Students at both schools started collecting the cans Monday with the donations going to St. Vincent de Paul and the Downtown Mission. The second part of the challenge takes place tonight at St. Christopher. Shane Topalovic of Next Level Athletics will visit the school to lead a fitness class for parents, students and staff with a focus on body weight exercises, stability and agility. The price of entry is a canned good (or several). Congratulations to staff and students at St. Christopher for taking the Challenge, getting fit and helping our community!

WECDSB SCHOOLS TAKE PART IN RICK HANSEN 25TH ANNIVERSARY RELAY

Tomorrow is going to be an exciting day for staff and students at two of our schools as the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay rolls through Windsor and Essex County. St. Joseph's Catholic High School will be the "Start of Day School" for the Rick Hansen Relay. Eight of the medal bearers for the day will meet in the gymnasium at 8 a.m. The day will start off with an assembly at 9:00 a.m. St. Joe's is very fortunate to have two of its students as medal bearers - Daniel Brenner and Jonah Revenburg. Both of these students are "difference makers" in our school as they deal with many obstacles in their lives on a daily basis. The relay will leave at 9:20am with Daniel exiting St. Joe's and then passing the medal off to Jonah at corner of McHugh and Morningstar. In the Belle River area, staff and students at St. John the Baptist will turn out in full force to cheer on their medal carrier, Marc Beneteau. Marc, a volunteer at St. John the Baptist has been chosen to run with the torch and all of the student body of St. John the Baptist will be in downtown Belle River to support him and the other runners. It’s not the first time Marc has been chosen to run in a relay. He also carried the Olympic Torch through Leamington, during the Vancouver Olympic games! Marc will run from Front Street (bridge into Belle River) to Capri Pizza (across from Tim Horton's). Please join us to cheer on our medal carriers!

STUDENTS STAND UP AGAINST BULLYING IN A SHOW OF SOLIDARITY

It’s been an amazing and inspiring week for staff and students of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board as numerous events were held at our schools to mark Bullying Awareness Week. The idea began with Canadian father and educator Bill Belsey. On February 16th, 2000 he launched the educational Web site www.bullying.org. Soon after, groups started asking him to make presentations about bullying in schools and communities across Canada and around the world. Through the Web site and his travels, he quickly realized that bullying was an issue that touches all people, directly or indirectly, regardless of their age, gender, culture, religion or nationality. For today’s teens, cyber-bullying has become a major concern. Technology provides a platform for some very creative bullying tactics. Cyber bullies use text messages, email, instant messages, social networking blogs, or web pages to harass, embarrass and intimidate other children. The bullying takes many forms, from spreading false rumours and posting embarrassing pictures of others to sending offensive messages, repeated harassment, stalking, threats and even extortion. This weekend, as Bullying Awareness Week wraps up, a group of more than 200 students (Holy Names, Cardinal Carter, Catholic Central) will gather to stand united in dance against cyber-bullying.

STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH & WELL-BEING FOCUS OF INNOVATIVE WEBCAST TO ALL WECDSB STAFF

Last February, the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board held an event that was the first of its kind in the history of the Board. As part of their Professional Development Day, WECDSB staff enjoyed a presentation by Windsor Regional Hospital’s Chief of Psychiatry, Dr. Leonardo Cortese. The amazing part is the presentation was streamed live from the boardroom at the Catholic Education Centre (CEC) to all secondary school sites. This Friday, the format will be used once again to share information with staff who will gather at their secondary school site within their Family of Schools. This year’s webcast will focus on Next Steps – What can we do within our existing role? In order to address school and classroom based questions, a panel of experts has been gathered for the event.

It started with Twitter. Next came the WECDSB Blog. Now, it’s YouTube. Today the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board launched its new YouTube channel, WECDSBChannel. The move adds another piece of the puzzle to the Board’s embracing of Social Media and all of the benefits that can be achieved through its use. “These days it’s not enough to put out a Media Release and hope that your story will get covered” says Communication Coordinator Jill Braido. “We have so many wonderful things happening in our schools and at our Board Office that we need to find new, more creative ways of sharing that information with the public, our parents and other stakeholders.” It’s hoped eventually the WECDSB YouTube Channel will also be a venue for the Board to share videos produced by our students through school activities. ST. GABRIEL STUDENT HEADED TO WORLD YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

She’s been playing chess since Grade 1. Next week, 12 year old Rachel Tao will pack her bags and travel with her family to Caldas, Brazil and the World Youth Chess Championships. The Grade 7 student at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Elementary School won the right to represent Canada with a top three finish at the Canadian Youth Chess Championships recently. Rachel’s parents taught her to play chess at a young age to help her learn to think logically, sequentially and improve her decision making process. Respect for others, concentration and persistence are other benefits of learning the game according to Rachel’s parents. While Rachel is used to playing games that last about three hours, the games at the World Championship level can often take five to six hours. Competitors will play nine games in eleven days. A win will give them a point, half a point is earned for a draw and a loss is zero. The player in each age group with the highest score will be names World Youth Champion.

However, the exciting news for the Tao family doesn’t end there. Rachel’s younger sister Ellen (Grade 4/St. Gabriel’s) is also a chess expert. Ellen recently won first place in her division at the Michigan International Chess Festival. The sisters are quickly becoming celebrities in the world of Chess. They were selected to appear in a promotional video by the 2016 Toronto Chess Olympiad Bid Committee. The video is being used to promote Toronto’s bid for the 42nd Chess Olympiad in 2016. HOLY NAMES STUDENT WINS PROVINCIAL FIRE SAFETY AWARD

Congratulations to Holy Names Catholic High School student Gordon Campbell. Recently, Gordon was honoured at the Fire Safety Awards ceremony in Toronto. The annual ceremony, hosted by the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council, recognizes outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in Ontario. Last year, Gordon took part in the co-op program and was placed with Windsor Fire and Rescue Services. He, along with another Windsor teen, Tyler Thibert, helped out at the Children’s Safety Village, which provides public education to students in Grades 1 and 3. While there, the young men came up with a fun and creative way of teaching young children about fire safety. Gordon and Tyler created a song about fire safety to sing to the children visiting the Safety Village. Gordon, a talented musician, and Tyler produced a show with Gordon singing the fire safety song and Tyler playing a puppet who encourages Gordon to sing. The show has proven to be a hit with the many young students that visit the Safety Village. Congratulations Gordon on receiving such a prestigious award!

As part of an ongoing effort to communicate information to our parents and stakeholders, the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board is proud to release a new DVD entitled “Did You Know?” as part of the Parents Reaching Out Regional Grant Initiative.

The goals and objectives of the DVD project were:
• To create an increased level of sensitivity in schools about the impact of having a child with a disability and/or special education need.
• To produce a video to be used as a training tool to assist teachers, support staff and administrators in recognizing the stresses, hurdles, challenges and issues that families encounter throughout their child’s life.
• Through personal stories from families, the video explains a family’s perspective on the importance of friendship and social contact with peers for their sons and daughters.
• To inspire teachers, support staff and administrators to facilitate friendships among all students to encourage long term relationships and friendships among peers.
• To strengthen the relationship, including communication and trust between parents and school/Board staff.

WECDSB STUDENTS HELP "COATS FOR KIDS"

One of the most amazing things about the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board staff and students is when there is a need in our community, our schools spring into action. For years now, St. Anne high school has held their annual “Coats for Kids” coat drive. A friendly, yet competitive race occurred between second period classes from Monday October 24th – Friday October 28th to see who could accumulate the most coats. The ultimate goal was to reach 1000 coats in one week. To add a little incentive, teachers as well as the principal agreed to dress up if the goal was reached. In those four days, an amazing 973 coats were brought in! Seeing as 1000 coats was the target and the kids came so close to achieving it, an extra day was given to reach the goal. We are happy to report that more than 1100 coats were brought in for “Coats for Kids”. Congratulations to Mr. Diluca’s class with an average of 5.3 coats per student! However, no total number of coats could be topped by Mrs. Livermore’s second period class who brought in a total of 90 coats! A huge thank you goes out to all the students who generously donated their coats and to Mrs. Livermore’s Life Skills drama class and Mr. Burke’s grade 11 world religion classes for counting and collecting all the coats. We set the standard for another great outcome next year!

However, the good news doesn’t end there. When the staff and students at Notre Dame Catholic Elementary School heard officials from the “Coats for Kids” organization on the radio saying they were in need of coats, an impromptu coat drive began. Keeping in line with their “Have You Filled a Bucket” theme, school officials and students thought gathering coats for those less fortunate would be a great way to fill the bucket of another. A letter was sent home to parents last Tuesday and as of yesterday morning more than 125 coats had been collected. Way to go!

PATHS TO PEACE: WAR OF 1812 ARTS LEGACY PROJECT

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board is very excited to have a group of students from Stella Maris Catholic Elementary School participate in the launch of Paths to Peace: War of 1812 Arts Legacy Project. Paths to Peace is an international education and art program commemorating the bicentennial of the War of 1812. This Thursday, 150 students from Windsor and Essex County schools will travel to Put-In-Bay, Ohio to meet and spend the day with 150 students from Bellevue Middle School in Bellevue, Ohio. Students will receive curriculum instruction presented by War of 1812 content specialists from Canada, the United States and First Nations/American Indians and participate in artist workshops and interpretive activities at the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial - the National Park Service site at which the gathering takes place.
After the day is done, students will return home and, with the guidance of their teachers and artistic mentors, will spend the next six months researching their respective community’s ties to the War of 1812, artists/craftsman of the times, peace movements and international relations. Throughout the year, students will explore various art forms – visual, media, performing and literary – to create work reflecting their observations and interpreting their experience as they incorporate period art and craft. Paths to Peace 2012 will culminate in May 2012 with the Paths to Peace Art Fests where the students will present their artworks to the general public at the War of 1812 historical sites in Canada (Fort Malden) and the USA (PVIPM).

The staff and students of St. Rose Catholic Elementary School are very proud to have been designated a Peace School by the Rotary Club of Windsor Roseland. A Rotary Peace School is one that encourages, fosters and promotes a safe, caring and welcoming environment.
On Thursday, October 27th, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. the staff and students of St. Rose School, along with Parish staff and members of the Roseland Rotary Club, will celebrate this honoured designation. The celebration will begin with a ceremony in the gymnasium followed by the placing of our new Peace Pole in the playground and the planting of trees around the peace garden with each tree representing our commitment to different facets of peace-making. Staff and students will each receive a bracelet reflecting the message inscribed in four different languages on the peace pole, "May peace prevail on earth." This message will serve to remind us all of our ongoing commitment to peace.

BISHOP FABBRO VISITS WECDSB STUDENTS

Each year, a formal dinner is held in Windsor in honour of Bishop Ronald Fabbro. The event is a fundraiser for St. Peter's Seminary in London. This year’s dinner is scheduled for tomorrow evening. In conjunction with the event, it has become a tradition that the day begins with an organized pastoral visit. This year, Bishop Fabbro will spend the morning with our Grade 11 students from St Thomas of Villanova Catholic High School and our Grade 5 and 6 students from St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School. While there, Bishop Fabbro will speak with the students of his vocation and take questions from the group. Please join us and share this wonderful opportunity for our students. Villanova’s visit will begin around 9:55 a.m. and last for about an hour. Bishop Fabbro will proceed to St. Joseph at around 11:15 a.m. and also last for about an hour.

CATHOLIC CENTRAL TRADITION CONTINUES! ANNUAL PEANUT BUTTER CHAIN BETTER THAN EVER!

The school community is hoping to collect 1600 kilograms of peanut butter to be distributed within our community. CHANGING THE WORLD, ONE BUCKET AT A TIME

It’s been a very exciting start to the school year at St. Christopher Catholic Elementary School. The theme this year revolves around "changing the world" with the students becoming "bucket fillers". The premise comes from the best-selling book, “Have You Filled a Bucket Today.” The story advances the theory that if we are nicer to one another, we'll feel better, and we'll all feel happier. Following that theme, three grade six students approached school administration about doing something to help raise money for Hospice and the Canadian Cancer Society. The students have started making "Cancer Key Chains" and have already sold some to every staff member at the school. Two of the three students have lost family members due to Cancer and want to help “fill the buckets” of the families that are going currently going through the same struggle that their loved ones did. This Friday, there will be a school assembly that highlights the three girls and what they hope to accomplish. The bucket filling theme will also be introduced to the school community. "WE ARE TRULY ONE" ST. JAMES OPEN HOUSE & SCHOOL BLESSING

It’s been one year since the amalgamation of St. Francis and St. James Catholic Elementary Schools in Windsor’s west end. During that time, many wonderful things have taken place at St. James to bring the school community together as one family under one roof. CATHOLIC CENTRAL GRAD COMES HOME - AJ ORAN SET TO RELEASE 1ST ALBUM

It’s been a busy year for AJ (Adriel) Oran. Not only has the Catholic Central graduate completed a psychology degree from the University of Windsor, Adriel is set to release his first album in Canada and the United States in the next few months. Even though Adriel started singing to his family at the early age of 4, the turning point came when he was 17 and sang at a Catholic Central rally. Immediate encouragement and support from students prompted more performances and the beginning of creating bands to play at clubs, talent shows and parties with Adriel as the lead singer. Three years ago, Adriel began posting his music to YouTube and now has more than 1.8 million views. The exposure also brought him to the attention of music industry professionals that recognized his talent and asked him to perform on the first YouTube DigiTour in May 2011. This year, while completing his degree, Adriel travelled back and forth to the U.S. to record his first CD project. His first single, “Fall in Love Again” was digitally released on iTunes last August 25th. Despite a hectic pace that includes television appearances in the U.S. and Canada, summer music festivals and planning for an upcoming tour in Asia for early 2012, Adriel is making time to come back to perform at his former high school. ST. ROSE SCHOOL COMMUNITY WALKS A MILE FOR A CHILD

How far would you walk if you knew that you could make a difference in the life of a suffering child? Recently, staff at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board was called to action after hearing stories of the tens of thousands of children dying of starvation and sickness in Africa. A collection was taken up and through matching funds from the Federal Government more than 25,000 dollars was raised. However, the giving hasn’t stopped there. The School Community of St. Rose Catholic Elementary has come together to make a difference and to affect positive change in the world. Together, they decided to walk a mile for a child and raise money to support “Free the Children”. Students have raised a total of $1300 in cash donations and have been able to provide emergency aid in the form of meals for a classroom of children for an entire month and nutritional check-ups and immunizations for multiple families. Their donations have also funded an irrigation system for a school garden, which will provide ongoing assistance. In addition to cash donations, the group purchased 88 Rafiki Friend Chains, which are inspired by the long chains worn by Maasai warriors and symbolize the unity between friends. All proceeds support Free the Children’s drought relief efforts in East Africa. The purchase of just one chain alone will help to feed one person for a month! Our cash donations and limited edition chain purchases, totaling over $2000 will bring hope and sustainable change to those suffering in East Africa. $82,000 AND GROWING - ST. ANNE STUDENTS & STAFF WALK FOR CANCER RESEARCH

Each year, 1500 staff and students at St. Anne Catholic High School walk to help raise awareness for Canadian cancer research through their annual Terry Fox event. Last year, the school was ranked #11 by the Terry Fox Foundation and was one of the “Top 50 Fundraisers of 2010.” This means that across Canada, St. Anne Catholic High School is recognized as a leader in fundraising efforts for cancer research. In the past six years, the school has raised more than $82 000 for the Terry Fox Foundation with $23,895 raised in last year’s event alone. This year, staff and students will be walking over 7 km in the Lakeshore area as a personal dedication to family members and friends who have been touched by cancer. CANADIAN HALF PINTS BRING ANTI-BULLYING MESSAGE TO WECDSB STUDENTS

The world’s smallest basketball team, the Canadian Half Pints, is celebrating 30 years of entertaining communities and educating children. The Half Pints are role models who emphasize the fact that we are all free to aspire to and accomplish our dreams and goals, regardless of our size, gender, religious persuasion, colour or disability. These talented basketball players may be small (average height is 4’) but they can play, winning more than 10,000 games and losing only 11. The team is bringing their “Bullying’s Not Kool, Keep It Out Of Our School” message to several of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board elementary sites this week. The team, led by founder Phil Watson, will talk about the harmful effects of bullying and teasing followed by some personal stories and suggested solutions. AFRICA’S CHILDREN NEED HELP

Recently, a news report predicted that the seven billionth citizen of our planet will likely be born next month and if that child is born in the Horn of Africa, a wretched life will be almost guaranteed. Even worse, that child is at an extremely high risk of dying young because Africa is afflicted with the highest child mortality rate in the world and is plagued by disease. Statistics tell us more than 30,000 children are dead and another 400,000 are malnourished enough that their death is only a matter of time. The worst drought in 60 years and rising food prices are the main culprits of the current plight affecting the continent. Recently, two of our students, Laura Limarzi (Gr. 12/Assumption) and Tyler Girard (Holy Names) spent several weeks in Kenya with the Free the Children organization helping to build a school. The primary goals of Free The Children are to free children from poverty and exploitation and free young people from the notion that they are powerless to affect positive change in the world. Laura and Tyler’s return home coincided with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board’s Together in Faith Day, a day when all Board employees gather together to celebrate our faith and start the school year on a positive note. News of the horrific situation in Africa, our student’s journey and the theme of the day, "If you love me, tend my sheep, feed my lambs" brought clear focus to a situation that we, as a caring Catholic community could not ignore. A collection was taken up that day and we are proud to report that $12,607.81 was donated by WECDSB staff to Free The Children. Matching funds from the Federal Government brings that total to more than twenty-five thousand dollars. Even more astounding, a few of our schools have chosen to continue to find ways to raise money for those children afflicted in Africa. Thank you to all that showed their compassion that day. You truly do make a difference.

ST. MARY STAFF & STUDENTS DEDICATE MEMORIAL GARDEN TO FORMER STUDENT

It promises to be an emotional and inspiring day Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Elementary School. The day will begin with a mass for staff and students during which former student Colby Vachon will be remembered. Colby passed away on September 15th of last year. Following mass, students, teachers, family and friends will walk over to the school for the blessing and dedication of a memorial garden. The garden was designed and built by Educational Assistant Janet Jenner, who took care of Colby at school during his illness. Then, following recess, students will participate in an event to mark National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day (which is actually on the 16th but can be done any day during that week). The children will receive a piece of chalk and draw hopscotch patterns in the school yard with messages related to the program. Colby’s mother, Liliana Sheldon, had asked the school to participate in the event in memory of her son. Thanks to the Jobin family for the donation of rocks and slate for the memorial garden. Also, thank you to the school community for donations that helped purchase items to create this beautiful memorial. We are very blessed to be a part of such a generous and compassionate community.

EQAO RESULTS FOR WECDSB FOR 2010-2011 ACADEMIC YEAR

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has released the results of the Primary and Junior Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics, as well as Grade 9 Academic and Applied Mathematics assessment of Ontario students during the 2010-2011 school year.

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board is proud to share the results of these assessments. Throughout the course of the 2010-2011 school year, teachers and principals, in collaboration with Ministry personnel, engaged in professional development activities detailing high yield strategies. These strategies were implemented to help increase student learning. We celebrate the efforts that our students, teachers and principals have put forth in implementing these strategies and continuing to increase student learning.

In our Grade 3 cohort 65% of our students achieved a Level 3 or Level 4 in the area of Primary Reading, 73% in Writing and 69% in Mathematics. In all areas of Reading, Writing and Math, Grade 3 students met the provincial achievement level. In our Grade 6 cohort, 72% of our students achieved a Level 3 or Level 4 in Reading, 71% in Writing, and 59% in Mathematics. Our Grade 6 students exceeded the provincial level of achievement in the area of Mathematics. In the Grade 9 assessment of Mathematics, 80% of students enrolled in the Academic course achieved at or above the provincial standard (Levels 3 & 4) compared to 72% in 2006-2007. This represents an 8% increase over the past five years. 44% of students enrolled in the Applied course achieved at or above the provincial standard compared to 38% in 2006-2007. This represents a 6% increase over the past 5 years.

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board continues to hold student achievement as a priority. Specific strategies implemented in the area of literacy and numeracy instruction in both the elementary and secondary panels will be showcased today at Christ the King Catholic Elementary School as staff and students celebrate out successful 2010-2011 provincial testing results.

TOGETHER IN FAITH - MAKING A DIFFERENCE

On Thursday, September 1st, the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board’s “Together in Faith Day” will take place for all board employees at the St. Denis Centre, University of Windsor. The annual event provides employees with an opportunity to come together as a community of believers and celebrate our Catholic faith. This year’s theme is “If you love me, tend my sheep, feed my lambs.” As you are no doubt aware, the situation in Africa is what one UN official calls a human disaster becoming a human catastrophe. Millions of people are facing starvation and an uncertain future as drought continues to destroy their crops and livestock. Statistics tell us more than 29,000 children are dead. Another 400,000 are malnourished enough that their death is only a matter of time. This tragedy is one that we, as a caring Catholic community cannot ignore. Tomorrow morning our Principals and several staff members will surround the St. Denis Centre, each holding a brightly coloured bucket which we are asking staff to fill with donations. We will also be joined by a very special surprise guest speaker that will make this an event many will remember for years to come. At the end of the event, the buckets will be brought out again and it’s likely those that weren't compelled to give at the start of the morning will have changed their minds. Please join us for what promises to be an amazing experience.

The objective is to enhance high quality summer program opportunities for children and youth in Windsor-Essex by offering free use of school space for organized community-based programs. It also provides employment opportunities and leadership activities for our secondary school students. Among the most popular is the Yellow School Bus Camp. This Thursday, the more than fifty campers and their student leaders will gather for their final day. This concludes six weeks of field trips, swimming, breakfast snacks, hot lunches, literacy fun, arts and crafts and fun times with friends, camp leaders and teachers. The day will end at 2:45 p.m. with the campers boarding the bus for the final ride of the Yellow School Bus Camp! Come join us for the fun!

CATHOLIC CENTRAL LEADERSHIP STUDENTS HELP HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

It was a call for help that a group of Catholic Central students couldn’t ignore. When it was reported on the news that volunteers were needed for the latest Habitat for Humanity build, twenty-five students from the summer school leadership class signed up immediately. The group will assist with the landscaping of the house. The Habitat for Humanity movement began in 1976 in Georgia and is built on the idea of partnership housing with volunteers working side by side with people in need to build safe, decent and affordable houses. The organization expanded to Canada in 1985 and now has seventy-two affiliates in ten provinces and two territories. Approximately 1,800 Canadian families have been provided with safe, decent and affordable housing since then. In thirty-five years, Habitat for Humanity International has built, rehabilitated, repaired or improved more than 400,000 houses worldwide – providing shelter for more than 2 million people.

WECDSB TRUSTEES APPROVE 2011-2012 BALANCED BUDGET

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board approved a balanced budget for the 2011-12 school year at a meeting held June 28, 2011. This budget will be filed with the Ministry of Education by the June 30, 2011 deadline. The budget reflects the commitment of the Board of Trustees to meet the needs of the students consistent with the balanced budget requirement mandated under the Education Act. The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board continues to achieve positive results in its primary objectives of faith development and student achievement. The board continues to dedicate significant resources to the realization of both of these goals. Faith development is not directly funded through Ministry of Education grants. Therefore, the Board must find efficiencies in other areas and re-direct the savings to make faith formation a priority. Student achievement is stressed for all WECDSB children and the Board remains deeply committed to an inclusionary model of education. Being an inclusive Board does require additional funding to be designated for special education. School boards continue to be responsible for setting their budgets. Education funding recognizes that school boards need flexibility to decide how to best allocate resources within those budgets to address local circumstances. At the same time, there are guidelines set by the Ministry on how school boards may use certain components of their allocation. School boards continue to be accountable for how they use all the revenue that they receive from education funding grants. The 2011-12 Budget, as presented, incorporates the financial direction for the school year announced by the Ministry of Education and key objectives of the Board for 2011-12.

COUNTDOWN TO FOCUS ON YOUTH

DALAI LAMA CONNECTS WITH ASSUMPTION STUDENTS

It has been a very exciting time for a group of students at Assumption College Catholic High School. In early May, the students organized a Free Tibet awareness event, offering cupcakes and a Tibet fact during their multicultural festival. Following that event, many students (members of various school clubs including Kids for Peace, Educare and several grade 11 World Religion classes) wrote hundreds of letters to the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India. The students asked personal questions, offered support to his people in exile from Tibet and commented on his ongoing struggle for social justice. A banner and several class pictures were also sent along. The students were thrilled when the Dalai Lama responded to their letters. The spiritual leader of the Tibetan people offered his support for their interest in seeking justice, compassion and non- violent beliefs. The Dalai Lama also indicated he was inspired by the students and responded to some of their questions. Catholic Studies Chairperson Jeanne Sauro led the students in their efforts. Sauro says, “As part of the Buddhism unit, I would always focus upon a justice issue related to the religion. Because I am fascinated by the compassion and justice of the Dalai Lama, I decided to use these letters as a justice campaign and a literacy component. I wanted students to have the experience of writing to a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and discuss their views of justice and the Tibetan exile.” Sauro says the students were excited to participate and even did a flash mob in the cafeteria during one lunch hour, entering the room with a banner, a Tibetan flag and a trumpet. The event ended with the entire student body singing "when I grow up, I will be stronger, just like a waving flag."

CATHOLIC CENTRAL GETS GREENER

The school yard around Catholic Central High School will be a greener area for students in the future thanks to a $1,000 grant through the Metro ‘Green Apple School’ program. The program is giving one million dollars per province to fund and support student and teacher initiatives based in conservation and healthy living. Earlier this year CCH students were consulted as to what they would like to see happen to a space at the South end of the school which was previously occupied by portables. Students contributed their ideas through the use of a school wide sketch style survey (see attached. Students were given a small site plan on which they could sketch out their own landscape plan/ideas for the space. Students in Mr. Spina’s Grade 10 Design class sorted through nearly 200 landscape plans. The overwhelming response from the student body was for a grassy area with an open recreational space and social seating/eating areas. This week a small berm for seating and sod were put in place. With this generous gift from Metro we hope to work towards the installation of benches, tables and new landscaping. Thanks again to Metro, and of course the students of CCH for their input.

$2011 CHARITY GRAD CHALLENGE - ST. JOSEPH'S GRADS PAY IT FORWARD FOLLOWING NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Students and staff at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School are celebrating some amazing news from Canadian Blood Services. With regards to blood donations for the year, St. Joe's has collected more units than any other school, not only in Ontario, but right across Canada (306 schools participated). That wasn’t the end of the good news though. C.B.S. officials revealed that the school had also taken top place for the most first-time donors, an amazing accomplishment! The titles also came with cash prizes, $500 for the national title, $500 for the provincial title and $400 for most first time donors. The student led “Blood Donor Committee” has decided to “pay it forward” by distributing the money to several charities on behalf of the St. Joseph’s school community. However, they’re hoping to do just a bit more. The committee is challenging the student body to come up with another $611 to add to the total through a school wide “collection” or 'penny drive' to bring the amount to $2,011, a total that corresponds to this year. Students will also enjoy 1,100 freezies tomorrow morning donated to the school by Tecumseh Zehrs as a congratulatory thank you to St. Joe’s for a job well done. A representative from Canadian Blood Services will be on hand to present the “Blood Donor Committee” with a token of appreciation. At that time the list of charities that will benefit from the cheque presentation and fundraiser will be made public.

PILGRIMAGE OF FAITH FOR GRADE EIGHT STUDENTS

With the school year quickly coming to an end, Grade 8 students at St. William and St. Gregory Catholic Elementary Schools are taking time this week to reflect on where they have come from, where they are going and how they are going to get there. Tomorrow morning, the students, along with their teachers and administration, will take part in a pilgrimage. The group will walk from St. William Catholic Elementary School to St. Anne Catholic High School. With guidance from St. Anne's students, the grade eights will be stopping at stations to reflect upon their lives--where they have been and where they will be going. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their faith formation, meet each other and build a sense of community for their future together as students at St. Anne's High School. It’s also hoped the event will help the students appreciate their time in Catholic Education as part of a bigger journey of faith respecting the home, school and parish partnership.

WFCU AWARDS HAROLD HEWITT SCHOLARSHIPS TO SEVEN WINDSOR-ESSEX CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD STUDENTS

The Harold Hewitt Scholarship (HHS) was established by the Windsor Family Credit Union in 2001 as a yearly contribution to the post-secondary education of youth in our community. Since that time, a total of $45,750 has been presented under the scholarship. This year, W.F.C.U. continued the tradition by presenting a total of $5,000 to 16 youth through the HHS program, including seven from the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board. Children enrolled in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12, were invited to write, in no more than 100 words, “What do you like best about living in Windsor and Essex County and why?” Select submissions from each age category were chosen and the authors named recipients of WFCU’s 2011 Harold Hewitt Scholarship. This special scholarship was inspired by the late Harold Hewitt, WFCU’s long term Director on the Board whose dedication to the community was an integral part of the Credit Union. ST. THOMAS OF VILLANOVA CELEBRATES THANKS TO LOWE'S TOOLBOX FOR EDUCATION GRANT

A journey that began last October for a group of students at St. Thomas of Villanova will soon come to its fruition. Last fall, the students, under teacher Larry Trealout, submitted a proposal to Lowe’s Home Improvement for their “Toolbox for Education and Skills Canada” program. The program provides parent groups and educators with the necessary financial tools to expand students' opportunities and improve schools throughout North America. A short time later, the school received the news that their proposal to build a room to teach construction had been chosen for the $4500 grant. Work began to build the room in April and tomorrow morning there will be a ribbon cutting at the school to officially open the room. Join us to hear first-hand how the room has already been used to help other students and groups at Villanova.

CARDINAL CARTER STUDENTS HELP RESTORE POINT PELEE NATIONAL PARK

It’s been an amazing year for students and teachers at Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School. The group has been working with officials at Point Pelee National Park to restore the savannah at the park’s West Beach. Many areas of curriculum have been included in the effort, including the Arts, Social Science and Technology. Students collected Native Species seeds from the restoration sites in the fall and Horticulture students cared for the seeds during the winter. On June first, students returned to the park to plant these native species seeds. In addition, Visual arts students have drawn, painted, and created prints of some of the native species found in the savannah habitat. This art work will be featured in a display at Point Pelee's Visitor Centre. The students and teachers were also recognized for their efforts in the April issue of Canadian Geographic Magazine. The issue focused on citizen involvement in parks and featured Point Pelee National Park. Please join us in celebrating the students’ efforts by attending the reception on Wednesday, June 8, 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Point Pelee's Visitor Centre.

WOW! Charities that focus on youth in Windsor and Essex County will get a financial boost of more than $20,000 thanks to the students and staff at Holy Names Catholic High School. On Monday, more than 1000 staff and students took to the streets of South Windsor and walked more than seven kilometers during the fifth annual We Walk for Kids Walkathon fundraiser. This money will be added to the more than $120,000, which has been dispersed to local charities from the four previous walkathons. The event is an excellent demonstration of the Holy Names motto Aliis Non Sibi, (For Others Not Oneself). This year, the following local youth charities will receive a donation on behalf of the Holy Names Community; St. Mary's Family Learning Centre, Windsor-Essex Therapeutic Riding Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Autism Ontario, Windsor Essex We Care for Kids Foundation, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. ST. JOSEPH'S KEEPS IT CLEAN - LITTLE RIVER CLEAN UP PROJECT SET TO GO

On Tuesday, May 31st, 2011, Leadership students at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School will participate in an environmental cleanup project in their community. The school grounds, area streets and the banks of the Little River will be completely cleared of garbage that has accumulated during the long winter months. Last fall, St Joseph’s won the Green Apple Grant, worth $1000, providing the tools and materials to get the job done! This program is sponsored by Metro Grocery Stores all across Ontario. Other participating groups are Windsor’s Clean Sweep Program, ERCA, and The Detroit River Clean-Up Project. St. Joseph Leadership Teacher, Mrs. Suzie Fetter, hopes to make the Clean-Up Project an annual event and foster a sense of pride in our community. They’ve waited seven months for this day. Last fall, the staff and students at St. Anne (French Immersion) Catholic Elementary School submitted a proposal for a greener schoolyard to the Pepsi Refresh Contest. The online competition asks people to vote for the idea that they think best deserves financial support from Pepsi. Thanks to overwhelming public support, St. Anne surged ahead in the voting and came out victorious, winning the ten thousand dollar grant. Tomorrow, the school community of St. Anne French Immersion Catholic Elementary School, along with several area dignitaries will gather to officially begin the greening of the schoolyard.

ANNUAL TRADITION CONTINUES AT HOLY NAMES CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL WITH MORE THAN $100,000 RAISED FOR CHILDREN'S CHARITIES

Holy Names Catholic High School is excited to announce their 5th annual "We Walk for Kids" walkathon which is set to take place on Monday, May 30th, 2011. In four years, the walkathon has raised more than $120,000, which has been distributed to local charities that focus on youth. The students and staff will be walking approximately seven kilometers. The event is an excellent demonstration of the Holy Names motto Aliis Non Sibi, (For Others Not Oneself). This year, the following local youth charities will receive a donation on behalf of the Holy Names Community; St. Mary's Family Learning Centre, Windsor-Essex Therapeutic Riding Association, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Autism Ontario, Windsor Essex We Care for Kids Foundation, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

4TH ANNUAL ELEMENTARY DAY OF CHAMPIONS

On Thursday, May 19, 2011, the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board will host the 4th annual Elementary Day of Champions. Approximately 80 students, ages 11 to 14, with physical and/or developmental disabilities or autism, will participate in a day of “Crazy Olympics” style events. The students will be accompanied by support staff and Learning Support Services teachers. The event promotes a sense of community among elementary students, staff members, and volunteers from our Life Skills programs in local Catholic high schools. Representatives from twenty-four of our elementary schools will take part, assisted by students in the Life Skills programs from our high schools. Members of the University of Windsor Lancers Football Team will also be on hand to demonstrate the games and cheer on our Champions. The theme this year is “We Are All Champions in God’s Eyes.” Please join us for this very exciting and inspiring event!

VILLANOVA CUTS FOR CANCER

On Monday, May 9th, St. Thomas of Villanova will be hosting the 4th annual cut-for cancer in the school atrium. Stylists from Youseff Salon will be at the school to cut the hair of approximately thirty-five staff and students. Participants have been growing their locks for awhile and must have at least eight inches of hair to cut off. The ponytails will be donated in order to produce wigs for women and children who have lost their hair due to cancer or alopecia. The hair that is cut is being sent to three different locations. Any ponytails that are 8 or 9 inches will be sent to Etobicoke. Ponytails that are ten inches or longer will be sent to London and any ponytails that have more than 5% gray will be sent out East. The cutting gets underway at 9a.m. and will continue until approximately noon.

STUDENT SPEARHEADS EFFORT TO "GREEN" HOLY NAMES CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

Next Tuesday is going to be a proud day for Grade 12 Holy Names student Alexandra Bondy. That’s the day work begins on the ‘greening’ of the school yard area. The funding comes from a $1,000 grant Bondy was awarded for her proposal to the Metro ‘Green Apple School’ program. The program is giving one million dollars per province to fund and support student and teacher initiatives based in conservation and healthy living. Thanks to the Essex Region Conservation Authority for their help in the planning and design of this new green space and Floods Nursery of Leamington for providing the trees and top soil. Phase one includes the planting of ten native species on the southwest corner of the school. Phase two and three will include making the area around the newly planted tress a sitting area for students with natural berms and a walking path. The goal is to complete phase II and III in 2012. Representatives from ERCA and Metro will also be on hand to answer questions.

PENNIES FROM THE HEART - STUDENTS SUPPORT BREAST CANCER RESEARCH

For the past couple of months, students at St. Anne (French Immersion) Catholic Elementary School have been busy collecting pennies in a fundraiser supporting breast cancer research. Friday afternoon, the fruits of their labour will be celebrated. Staff, students and University of Windsor representatives will gather for an assembly where a cheque will be presented for the Carl and Gloria Morgan Scholarship in Breast Cancer Research. Students will cut their hair and male staff members will shave their legs as rewards for the highest donations collected. The theme of Catholic Education Week “Celebrating the Spirit” will be interwoven throughout the assembly with a presentation highlighting the examples of the generosity of the St. Anne school community. So far, close to ten thousand dollars has been raised by St. Anne for the scholarship. Way to go!

The halls of Catholic Central High School are buzzing this week as the school prepares to host its first-ever Spelling Bee for English Language Learners. The participants have been working hard during the last six weeks honing their spelling skills. It’s an amazing accomplishment considering many of these students spoke little or no English before they arrived at the school. Initially, all 160 ELL students were asked to take part in the competition. That number was whittled down to twenty-six. Now, the final ten are ready for the final showdown to see who gets to take home the Catholic Central Spelling Bee Cup. It promises to be an exciting finish, one you won’t want to miss!

Hot on the heels of last fall’s Pepsi Refresh Challenge win by St. Anne French Immersion Catholic Elementary School, St. Joseph Catholic Elementary is now in the running for a twenty-five thousand dollar grant in the contest. The school is hoping to purchase musical instruments to begin a instrumental music program for grades seven and eight to enhance the curriculum expectations in music. The program will enable the students to participate fully in the music curriculum and express themselves through music. The purchase would include enough flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, and a set of orchestral bells to outfit two complete classrooms. By beginning a program in elementary school, the students would then have the opportunity to continue with music education at the high school level. Besides class lessons, students would now have the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular ensembles and to perform as a band.
How the $25,000 would be used:

ASSUMPTION STUDENT EARNS ACCOLADES!

Since early March, Assumption College Catholic High School student Laura Limarzi has competed in a series of public speaking contests through Optimist International. Monday March 7th marked the first of these contests as the Grade 11 student delivered a spirited speech on children's rights around the world. She beat out a strong field of local competitors and advanced to a regional contest.

Despite changing a few details for the second round, she achieved the same result; 1st place! This victory qualified her for a third round of competition, in Port Stanley, Ontario. Once again, Laura's superior research and well timed delivery proved to be the right stuff, as she collected her third consecutive victory and thus a spot in the provincial finals.

On April 16, Laura carried this momentum into the final contest, and delivered easily the most powerful talk amongst the competitors. This fourth straight victory capped off an incredible run for one of Assumption's finest!! In total, she won $2600 in scholarship money in the process.

Not to be content with resting on her laurels, Laura is also being acknowledged for her strong support of Catholic Education. She is featured on the front page of the Catholic Register on why she values Catholic Education. To read the article:

DISCOVER YOUR POSSIBILITIES PROGRAM HOLDS DAY OF CELEBRATION

Since its establishment in 2007, the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board’s Discover Your Possibilities (DYP) Program has provided select groups of students the opportunity to participate in various organized activities designed to enhance self-esteem, develop resiliency skills, experience leadership opportunities and promote healthy and active lifestyles. One of the key components of the success of this program is a partnership with the University of Windsor. This allows senior students from the Faculties of Kinesiology and Education to interact with the students as mentors throughout the school year. This year, the program was expanded to include each school’s Community Police Liaison Officer thanks to a generous grant from the Ministry of Correctional Services enabling students to see the Police Services Officers in a completely different role. The Program involved a 3 day camp experience at Youth Leadership’s Camp Canada where the students challenged themselves and participated in many team building activities. As many of us prepare to gather for our Easter dinner, staff and students of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board are holding events to mark the true meaning of the season. Tomorrow is Holy Thursday, the Thursday before Easter that commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. Of course, it is the day before Good Friday. Here are some of the ways that schools are marking the occasion:

- At H.J. Lassaline, Mrs. L’Esperance’s Grade 7 class will be showing a live presentation of the Stations of the Cross. It is a tradition to honour Jesus. It will be moving, emotional, and reverent. The event will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.
- Meanwhile, the grades 2/3 and 5/6 classes of St Bernard (Windsor) will also be performing the Stations of the Cross at 1:00 pm in the school gym. It promises to be a very emotional and moving presentation for staff and students alike.
- The "Holy Thursday - Day of Service" is an event that is unique to F.J. Brennan Catholic High School. A few years ago it was decided that it would be more meaningful to have the students learn first-hand the meaning of the tradition behind the washing of the feet. Brennan students will spread out in the community and spend most of the day in service. We have groups going to several locations in the community including a retirement home, the Downtown mission, and helping out at several local businesses.

SPRING SAFETY IS IN THE AIR AT W.J. LANGLOIS CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Spring Safety is in the air at W.J. Langlois Catholic Elementary School. During the week of April 11 – 15th th, the Safe School Committee at W.J. Langlois, with the assistance of many amazing Grade 8 leaders and staff members, will host a variety of events all geared towards staying safe.
Monday is Fire Safety Day, students and staff will have the opportunity to talk to Windsor Fire Fighters as well as tour a fire truck. The day would not be complete without practicing a fire drill.
Tuesday is Stranger Danger Day. Primary students will be treated to presentations by the Kids on the Block. Some of our junior students will head over to the Safety Village for a field trip.
Wednesday is Transportation Safety Day. A presentation by Windsor Police will take place.
Thursday is Bike Safety Day. Students within the neighbourhood are invited to bike to school that day. We will also be hosting a Bike Rodeo from 4-6 in our school yard. Healthy snacks will be provided and Windsor Bike Paramedics will be on scene having children ride through various obstacle courses, as well as fitting bike helmets properly.
Friday is Water and Sun Safety Day. Students will participate in an outdoor school wide walk in the park and have an outdoor picnic together, all while enjoying the sun safely!
The week will also consist of various classroom activities such as creating ‘sun safety raps’, videos, media clips, as well as a school-wide colouring contest that supports the important safety message.
Kudos to the dedicated staff and Safe School’s Team at W.J. Langlois for their determination to promote safety in their school! Have Fun, BUT… Be Safe!

BE THE CHANGE! CHALLENGE DAY COMES TO HOLY NAMES HIGH SCHOOL

Since its inception in 1987, the program has served more than 1,000,000 youth in 400 cities, five provinces of Canada and 45 U.S. States. The day-long event challenges students to step out of their comfort zones through barrier-breaking activities to bring issues like alienation, teasing, bullying and violence to light. The program is designed to build connections and empathy and create a world where students feel safe, loved and celebrated. Those who have witnessed a Challenge Day Event at other schools have often stated there is a noticeable change in the way students treat each other and the atmosphere at the school. Congratulations to Assumption and Cardinal Carter for their recognition at this weekend’s Windsor Regional Science, Technology and Engineering Fair at St. Clair College. Both schools were recognized with an Excellence in High School Participation Bursary.

Individually, two Cardinal Carter students did an incredible job at the Windsor Regional Science Fair this weekend. Grade 10 students Grace Enns and Joseph Najem both won gold medals in the intermediate division. In addition, Grace won the St. Clair College Excellence in Technology Award, The Technology Award, and the St. Clair College Excellence in Innovation and Technology Award. Both Grace and Joe were also chosen to advance to the Canada Wide Science Fair to be held in Toronto in May. For that honour, Grace received the W.E.C.D.S.B. prize to cover the expenses of her trip, and Joe won the University of Windsor, Faculty of Science Prize to cover his expenses. In addition, Grade 9 Cardinal Carter student Catherine Rumiel won a Bronze award for her project and Grade 9 student Spencer Mastronardi received an honourable mention as well as the Al-Hijra school Environmental Science award and the Greater Windsor Horticultural Society Award. Way to go to all those that participated!

CREATING THE SPACE FOR STUDENT SUCCESS AT CARDINAL CARTER CATHOLIC SECONDARY SCHOOL

Helping ensure student success is the inspiration behind a day-long event at Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School. The day will begin with Grade Assemblies with the following focus:
• Getting students to take responsibility for their choices
• Encouraging students to think about how THEY want to contribute to their school, and what their personal achievement goals are
• The importance of working together with other people
• Persevering through difficult situations

In the afternoon, interactive workshops will see student leaders working with at-risk students with the following focus:

• Interactive activities to reinforce the above (responsibility, visualization and goal setting, teamwork and perseverance in challenging times)
• Creativity - one of the most important and most undervalued skills essential for success in today’s rapidly changing world.
• The creativity activity will help people see the difference between divergent (creativity) and convergent (critical), and appreciate the value of each.
• Perseverance - believing that one has the capacity to "make something" out of a less-than-perfect situation.

The day will culminate with a parent workshop on “Creating the Space for Student Success”. Motivational speaker Joel Hilchey will speak about the skills necessary to create super student leaders. Topics include taking responsibility, setting goals, prioritizing and managing time, listening well, helping others, co-operation and teamwork, leading a balanced life and contributing to their community. All are welcome.

There’s a special treat today for the Gr. 10 ten Civics students at Catholic Central High School. Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis is taking time out of his busy schedule to visit and talk with the students today. Mayor Francis will speak about how he overcame limitations and obstacles, many similar to those faced by students today, to become not only a successful businessman and lawyer, but the Mayor of Windsor. Students are looking forward to hearing about his role and responsibilities as the Mayor and how they can become more active and informed citizens in their community. Civics is the study of rights and duties of citizenship. In other words, it is the study of government with attention to the role of citizens, as opposed to external factors, in the operation and oversight of government. Within a given political or ethical tradition, civics refers to educating the citizens.

PRESTIGIOUS MATHEMATIC AWARDS FOR TWO W.E.C.D.S.B. TEACHERS

Two mathematics teachers with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board have been selected as recipients of prestigious awards from The Ontario Association for Mathematics Education. Assumption College Catholic High School teacher Steve Chevalier is the 2011 recipient of the Award for Exceptional and Creative Teaching in Secondary Mathematics. This award recognizes an exceptional and creative secondary teacher who demonstrates excellence in mathematics education and contributes to the overall development of students. Steve has also been awarded the Descartes Medal for the Advancement of Mathematics in Ontario from the University of Waterloo Rene Descartes Foundation.

Our second award winner is David Petro. David is the former Math Department Head at Cardinal Carter High School and currently works at the Catholic Education Centre in Secondary D.I. Numeracy Support. David is the 2011 recipient of OAME Award for Leadership in Mathematics Education. The award recognizes an educator who has demonstrated leadership by contributing in a significant way to the development of mathematics teachers and enhancing mathematics education in Ontario.

OAME envisions a learning environment where all students do, see, hear, and touch mathematics in a profound and meaningful way. The association sees the classroom as a community where teachers and students work collaboratively to learn and value mathematics. Its mission is to promote excellence in mathematics education throughout the province of Ontario

More than 130 of the area’s finest young math minds will converge on the University of Windsor’s Faculty of Education Saturday morning for the Windsor-Essex Mathematics Olympics. The competition, for grades 7 and 8, is organized by the Southwestern Ontario Association of Mathematics Educators (SWOAME) and the University of Windsor. Events include individual and team competitions. Plaques will be presented to the winners during a ceremony at 12:30 p.m. There will be several math activities designed to help the organizing committee choose the two teams that will go on to represent our region at the OMO (Ontario Math Olympiad) to be held at the University of Toronto on June 3 and 4th, 2011.

GREAT THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT ST. ALEXANDER CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

We are proud to announce that St. Alexander Elementary School was chosen as a winner of the Rotary Club of Windsor Roseland’s Peace Prize for 2011. Based on an application, St. Alexander was picked as a Rotary Peace School because it encourages, fosters and promotes a safe, caring and welcoming environment. The school community demonstrates an unwavering commitment to the process of peace and a pledge to stop violence in all forms, promote peace, a respect for life and dignity of others.

On Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011, students from St. Alexander attended the Rotary Club of Windsor Roseland’s Annual Peace Skate at Charles Clarke Square to celebrate Rotary International's Day of World Peace and Understanding. This was a wonderful event in which students skated together for peace. The group also received an honour board during their visit. In the spring, the school will be presented with a Rotary Peace Pole, which will be planted on their school property and each student will receive a bracelet inscribed with “Let Peace Prevail on Earth” as a constant reminder to think about peace. Congratulations Crusaders!

In further demonstrating their commitment to help others, this week the students and staff of St. Alexander began their campaign, led by Student Council, to help make the dreams of a sick child become closer to reality. Knowing that we are called to serve one another, the school community decided to join the Make- a- Wish Foundation. As always, school staff teaches students that helping others is the way Jesus led his life. The school sold "Wish Wands" to embrace this worthy cause.

Tafelmusik - The word is German and means “table music” or “music for the feast.”
The name is apt because Tafelmusik has produced a feast of firsts and bests and has won admiration throughout the musical world. Through its extensive national and international tours, its critically-acclaimed recordings and TV broadcasts, its new media initiatives and growing web of community and artistic partnerships, Tafelmusik is one of most prolific orchestras in the world. Tafelmusik - Canada’s award-winning period instrument orchestra - was founded in 1979 and has long been renowned in North America and internationally for its distinct, exhilarating and soulful performances. The Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, specializing in baroque performance practice and vocal technique, was formed in 1981 to complement the orchestra. THERE'S NO DEBATING IT! ASSUMPTION'S DEBATE TEAM IS #1!

The domination continues! The Debate Team from Assumption College Catholic High School (International Baccalaureate World School) took part in a tournament this past weekend at the University of Windsor. The Assumption Raiders absolutely dominated the team and individual awards, once again proving why they're the top debate team in Southwestern Ontario. Daniella Pallisco, Norman Nehmetallah and Kaitlyn Meloche delivered four rounds of undefeated debates on their way to winning first place overall! The Grade 12 squad of Sarah Harrison, Warren Pawlikowski, Dominic Pizzolitto and Alex Tesolin also took home hardware with their 2nd place finish (open). Of the 35 teams and 140 debaters, two of the Raiders took home individual honours. Josh St. Denis won 'Best Rebuttal' and Norman Nehmetallah secured the very prestigious "Best Presenter" honour.
Our junior teams were also fantastic. They scored many victories against senior teams from other schools which helped our older teams separate from the pack. It was truly and amazing effort by all who took part!

A BUSY TIME AT ST. MARY (WITH FRENCH IMMERSION) CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

St. Mary with French Immersion Catholic School is a very busy place these days. Shortly after the Christmas break, a "knitting club" was formed at the school. Students learned to use a loom and since then have made several hats and matching scarves. Not only is the club enjoying the activity, they take pride in knowing they’re helping out boys and girls in their community who are less fortunate than them. Fourteen sets have already been delivered to Immaculate Conception School. The knitting club meets every Monday during lunch hour and will continue to make scarves and hats until all the yarn is finished. Much of the yarn is donated by students’ families. Also, this is French week at St. Mary. Today, staff and students will welcome Bonhomme and hold a school bingo. Parents have donated cakes to the school that will be used as a class "prize" for the winning classes. (every class will eventually be presented with a cake). Wednesday, all students will head to Essex Arena for some skating. Afterwards, it’s back to school to make Bonhomme marshmallows and some hot chocolate. Thursday, staff and students will enjoy a presentation from Les Coureurs du Bois and Friday is the French Cafe and Readathon.

HOLY NAMES STUDENT TO PERFORM AT CARNEGIE HALL THIS WEEKEND

It’s a prestigious honour that few get to experience. This Saturday, Stefania Cian, a Holy Names student, will be performing on Flute with the American High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. Stefania’s music teacher, Rose Jobin, recommended and submitted her name to the audition committee at Carnegie Hall in September of last year. Stefania mailed an audition recording of her repertoire to the committee and learned in December that she was accepted and invited to perform with eighty musicians from across North America. She will leave for New York tomorrow to rehearse with the Honor Band in preparation for Saturday’s performance. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform with the “top musicians” from across Canada and the United States. In addition to working with Mrs. Jobin for a number of years, Stefania studies flute under Dr. Jonathan Bayley, Director of the School of Music, at the University of Windsor and takes theory classes with Katherine Zarlenga at Academy St. Cecile. Congratulations to this talented musician for achieving such an elite accomplishment at such a young age! Her hours of practice, persistence and endurance have been recognized and rewarded.

It’s an exciting time at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board. Not only is Kindergarten Registration underway, but there are many great things happening in our classrooms. Many are examples of the caring and compassionate nature of our students and staff. Here are a couple of examples.

This morning, four of our Grade 8 students from Our Lady of Mount Carmel will be handing out candy grams for Valentine’s Day. The young ladies are raising money for Project GirlsUP. The idea began after one of the students discovered an article in a magazine talking about Project GirlsUp that helps young ladies in underdeveloped countries receive assistance for education So far, the four girls have made more than $600.00 and the total continues to grow. They’ll be handing out the remainder of the candy grams at the school this morning at 10 a.m. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is located at 1400 Cousineau Road.

Tomorrow, L.A. Desmarais will host the Windsor Police Colour Brigade. The group will perform for our students and discuss the history of the flag with the student body. The performance will take place Tuesday, February 15th at 1 p.m. L.A. Desmarais is located at 10715 Eastcourt Drive.

Also, don’t forget about the Racing Against Drugs program underway this week at the Ciociaro Club. The community-based drug awareness program is delivered through the RCMP, along with various community and corporate partners including the WECDSB. Racing Against Drugs is designed to promote healthy, drug free lifestyles and to allow Grade 5 students the opportunity to experience many exciting hands-on racing activities while delivering a positive message. More than 1600 of our grade five students are taking part in two sessions today and tomorrow. The sessions run at 9:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. and 12:00 pm – 1:45 p.m.

1661 WECDSB GRADE FIVE STUDENTS JOIN RCMP TO RACE AGAINST DRUGS!!

Racing Against Drugs is a community-based drug awareness program delivered through the RCMP, along with various community and corporate partners including the WECDSB. The primary objective of this drug education initiative is to utilize the sport of auto racing to capture the attention of young people and communicate with them, through an exciting and high profile sport - one with no tolerance for substance abuse. Racing Against Drugs is designed to promote healthy, drug free lifestyles and to allow Grade 5 students the opportunity to experience many exciting hands-on racing activities while delivering a positive message. This most valuable event gives numerous agencies the opportunity to reach young people with a strong anti-drug message. Students are divided into groups of 20-25 and rotate every 8 minutes to a new pit stop. Although there are 24 pit stops, all groups get to experience at least 12 pit stops during their sessions. Over the last 5-6 years, the WECDSB has had 100% participation. That is the case again this year with 1661 Grade five students from every elementary school in our system taking part. We will also have a dozen leadership students from St. Joe's for support on both days. Please join us for this very exciting and educational event!

SACRED HEART SCHOOL CHANGES LIVES OF FAMILIES IN GUATEMALAN VILLAGE

Congratulations to the staff and students of the Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School Community. Recently, missionaries from Guatemala Hope visited the school and spoke to staff and students about the organization and what they do. Guatemala Hope is a non-profit organization based in Essex County dedicated to improving the quality of life and self-sufficiency of the villagers of El Triunfo, Guatemala and the surrounding area. Through much hard work, the students of Sacred Heart managed raised more than two thousand dollars to purchase a house for a family in El Triunfo. The staff also donated six hundred dollars to send two young people from the village to school for a year. The organization “Guatemala Hope” continues to be outstanding and ensures that 100% of all money donated goes directly to the Guatemalan people. The staff and students of Sacred Heart School Community have been supporting Guatemala Hope since 2003. They continue to make a difference in the lives of the people from El Triunfo and surrounding areas in Guatemala.

It’s the first of its kind in the history of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board. This Friday, Dr. Leonardo Cortese, Chief of Psychiatry at Windsor Regional Hospital will make a presentation on Student Mental Health and Well-Being in the boardroom at the Catholic Education Centre (CEC). The truly amazing part is, the presentation will be streamed live from the CEC to all secondary school sites. Each site will be hosted by the principal of the secondary school. In addition to the staff from the secondary schools, Principals, Vice-Principals, Teachers, Educational Assistants, Learning Commons Specialists, Secretaries from their feeder elementary schools will take part in the event. Faculty of Education students from the University of Windsor will also attend. Questions from the audience will be sent electronically from the schools to the CEC where they will be relayed to Dr. Cortese. In addition to teaching staff, attendees will include, Speech-Language Pathologists, Psychology Staff, Social Workers, Behaviour Specialists, Consultants, Coordinators and System Support Staff. The broadcast will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. and will finish at approximately 11:15 a.m. The presentation is another example of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board’s commitment and dedication to helping students and families who are affected by mental illness. As a winter storm continues to move through the area, officials with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board have confirmed that school buses will NOT be running tomorrow morning. Heavy snowfall and windy conditions are expected to continue throughout the night and into tomorrow morning. Officials at the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board are monitoring the forecast closely and working in conjunction with other local school boards. Once again, a decision has been made to cancel bus transportation to both city and county schools tomorrow, Wednesday, February 2 due to severe weather conditions.

ST. GREGORY AMONG WINNERS IN PROVINCIAL WASTE FREE LUNCH CHALLENGE

The results are in! Today, the Recycling Council of Ontario announced that St. Gregory Catholic Elementary School has been chosen as one of twenty winners of the Waste Free Lunch Challenge. Last October, more than fifty thousand Ontario students in 700 schools participated in the Challenge (www.wastefreelunch.com) as part of Waste Reduction Week in Canada. Organizers say the results were a huge success. Ontario students successfully prevented approximately 50 tonnes of waste from being shipped to landfill sites. Each winning classroom will receive a thousand dollars in prizes donated by Metro, for use in school-based environmental projects. All registered students will receive a reusable aluminum water bottle in recognition for their efforts. The program is designed to help schools reduce the amount of garbage they generate during the lunch hour. It also educates students, staff and parents about effective waste minimization. Statistics show the average elementary-school student's lunch generates 30 kilograms of waste per school year. During Waste Reduction Week, students from registered classrooms committed to bringing a waste-free lunch every day. A waste free lunch (sometimes called litter-less, smart, garbage-less or waste-not lunch) contains no throwaway packaging. All containers are re-sealable in order for all leftover food or drink to be consumed or composted later.

W.E.C.D.S.B. SCHOOLS GET INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT!

As we continue to prepare for Christmas, our staff and students are marking the season with some wonderful events. Tomorrow, the final day of class before the holiday break, many staff and students are taking the day to celebrate the season. Here are just three of the several events going on:

1. Annual Christmas Lunch at Catholic Central; Catholic Central has a tradition of providing a full Christmas lunch to all students and staff on the final day of school before the break. The meal consists of turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, pasta, corn, salad, rolls, beverage and dessert. Much of the lunch is donated by businesses in the school’s neighbourhood. For many of Catholic Central’s students, the bountiful lunch will be their true Christmas meal. Leftovers from the meal are sent to the Salvation Army, which always accepts this lunch for their clients. The day begins at 9:45 with a Liturgical Celebration and Concert. Lunch is served at 11:45am

2. The St. Joseph school community is once again looking forward to celebrating the Christmas season with our Mass, brunch and Catholic Cup Hockey game on Friday, December 17th. While this tradition began over twenty years ago with a smaller school community, the whole-hearted response of our students, staff and parent volunteers help us to carry on this beautiful school tradition. The day begins at the school with Mass at 9:30 a.m. followed by brunch at 11:00 a.m. The celebration will then move to the W.F.C.U. Centre for the Catholic Cup scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. We look forward to carrying on this long-held tradition of giving and sharing which has become a source of school pride.

3. The Assumption College Catholic High School Community would like to thank all those who generously donated their time and resources towards the success of our Annual Can Drive. Over 36,000 cans were donated to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul through the students' door-to-door efforts across the City. Representatives from the Society will attend Mass at the school on Friday morning at 10am, with a brief presentation of appreciation set for 11 am in the school gym.

WINDSOR CHILDREN "KNIGHTED" WITH NEW WINTER COATS, LOCAL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCILS HELP CHILDREN IN NEED

Windsor – December 16, 2010. As the cold winter months approach, many children in our communities will not have a warm winter coat to wear, simply because their families cannot afford to purchase one. As part of their Coats for Kids program, local Knights of Columbus councils have donated 125 coats to children in need. The initiative is part of the Order’s Help a Child in Need campaign, which began in 2006 with donations to charities that support the needs of children. “Helping children in need was a fundamental reason for the formation of the Knights of Columbus in 1882 and continues to be an important component of our work today,” said Arthur Peters, State Deputy, Ontario State Knights of Columbus. “No child should miss out on school or winter activities because they do not have the appropriate winter clothing. It is very important to respond within our communities in concrete ways to help those most in need,” said Peter Lemon, State Warden, Ontario State Knights of Columbus. In total more than 500 coats will be distributed by the Knights of Columbus Coats for Kids program across Ontario. Last year, the Knights of Columbus donated more than $151 million to charity and individual Knights donated over 69 million hours of their time to volunteer service. There are more than 1.8 million Knights in fourteen thousand local councils on three continents.

The Christmas season will be much warmer for many students at four area schools thanks to a very generous donation from the Catholic Women’s League (CWL), the community and some very generous sponsors. This afternoon, members of the CWL will gather at St. Angela Merici Church to organize the approximately 270 coats and 200 boots that have been gathered for distribution. The winter wear will go to students in both the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board and the Greater Essex County District School Board. From the Catholic Board, St. James and Immaculate Conception School will receive the donation. From the Greater Essex County Board, the students of Forest Glade and Roseville schools will benefit from the generous gift. It’s expected the apparel will be delivered to the schools by the end of this week and just in time for the Christmas break.

WECDSB DONATION HELPS SALVATION ARMY SOUP KITCHEN STAY OPEN

Christmas is the season of giving and staff and students of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board have come through in a BIG way. In October, it was learned that the Salvation Army’s soup kitchen was in danger of having to close its doors due to lack of funding. A call was put out to WECDSB staff to dig deep into their pockets and give what they could. What happened next was amazing! Within one day, $1,300 dollars had been raised and officials from The Essex Power Authority stepped up and agreed to match the school board’s donation up to a maximum of $5,000. Students joined in the fundraising effort and also brought in food donations. Today, less than two months later, $10,000 and the food collected was handed over to officials at the Salvation Army. The money helps to ensure the Salvation Army will be able to continue serving dinner through this winter and beyond. The soup kitchen has been serving warm homemade soup and bread to more than 50 people, including women and children, every day during the colder months for the past 30 years. The cost to sustain the program is about $200 a day. Donations are still welcome. They can be mailed to or dropped off at the Salvation Army at 355 Church Street, Windsor On, N9A 7G9. At its annual organizational meeting, trustees with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board elected Windsor Ward 5 & 8 Trustee Fred Alexander as chair of the nine-member Board. Alexander was first elected to the Board in 2000 and, over the past 10 years, has served in several leadership roles including Board Chairperson in 2002, 2003, 2009 and 2010. Trustee Mary DiMenna was acclaimed to the position of Vice-Chair. DiMenna has been a trustee representing Catholic ratepayers, parents and students in Essex, Kingsville and Leamington since 2003. In addition to spending 33 years as an elementary teacher, DiMenna has been active on several Board committees over the past seven years: including the Audit Committee, Employee Wellness Committee and the Employee Benefits Committee.

Three new trustees, Jim McMahon, Bernie Mastromattei and Frank Favot took their place on the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board this evening. They, along with returning trustees, Fred Alexander, Mary DiMenna, John Macri, Joan Courtney, Lisa Soulliere and Barbara Holland were sworn in this evening. The Board of Trustees of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board is comprised of nine trustees who are elected through the municipal elections process to serve a four-year term. A Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson are elected annually at the Board’s Organizational Meeting in December to a one-year term that begins immediately.
